Regenerative Medicine Now Being Used in Avascular Necrosis at the Center for Regenerative Medicine

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) May 19, 2012

Regenerative medicine may help with Avascular Necrosis, according to A. J. Farshchian MD an Orthopedic Regenerative physician at the Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Avascular necrosis can be quite devastating, and lead to total loss of the ankle joint with arthritis, deformity and pain. Loss of blood supply to the bone can be caused by an injury (trauma-related avascular necrosis) When a joint is injured, as in a fracture or dislocation, the blood vessels may be damaged. This can interfere with the blood circulation to the bone and lead to trauma-related avascular necrosis. Studies suggest that this type of avascular necrosis may develop in more than 20 percent of people who dislocate their hip joint.

Some medicines such as Corticosteroids are commonly used to treat diseases in which there is inflammation, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and vasculitis. Studies suggest that long-term, systemic (oral or intravenous) corticosteroid use is associated with 1/3 of all cases of non-traumatic avascular necrosis. The current theory is corticosteroids may interfere with the body’s ability to break down fatty substances. These substances then build up in and clog the blood vessels, causing them to narrow. This makes less blood to gets to the bone. Excessive alcohol use and corticosteroid use are two of the most common causes of non- traumatic avascular necrosis. In people who drink an excessive amount of alcohol, fatty substances may block blood vessels causing a decreased blood supply to the bones that results in avascular necrosis.

Other risk factors or conditions associated with non-traumatic avascular necrosis include Gaucher’s disease, pancreatitis, radiation treatments and chemotherapy, and blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. Avascular necrosis strikes both men and women and affects people of all ages. It is most common among people in their thirties and forties. Depending on a person’s risk factors and whether the underlying cause is trauma, it also can affect younger or older people.

In the early stages of avascular necrosis, patients may not have any symptoms. As the disease progresses, however, most patients experience joint pain—at first, only when putting weight on the affected joint, and then even when resting. Pain usually develops gradually and may be mild or severe. If avascular necrosis progresses and the bone and surrounding joint surface collapses, pain may develop or increase dramatically. Pain may be severe enough to limit the patient’s range of motion in the affected joint. The period of time between the first symptoms and loss of joint function is different for each patient, ranging from several months to more than a year.

The Center for Regenerative Medicine in Miami, Florida concentrates on helping arthritic and injured people to get back to a functional level of life and their activities using non-surgical techniques and Orthopedic medicine. The center’s expertise is in treatment of conditions of spine, knees , shoulders , and other cartilage damages. We have developed non-surgical and rehabilitation techniques focused on treatment and management of joint pain. Our team includes health professionals organized around a central theme.

CancerSteps by MyMedLab

Joplin, MO (PRWEB) May 19, 2012

As the city of Joplin, Missouri reflects on the one year anniversary of the powerful storm that cut a mile wide and twelve miles long path of destruction throughout the city, Joplin based MyMedLab has partnered with oncology advisor, Edwina Rains, to create CancerSteps.

CancerSteps is a social health system that provides families with access to basic lab tests and personal health records to track their results over time. CancerSteps includes a comprehensive database of resources to help support the patient and family, and also provides assistance with insurance billing.

From the web or any smartphone, CancerSteps includes a place to ask questions, share success stories, and to speak directly with Edwina and other health providers to help patients and families make more informed choices about their health care.

“As an administrator in an oncology office for the past twenty years, I have been in a position to make a difference for families in the most difficult time of their lives,” said oncology advisor, Edwina Rains. The May, 2011 tornado not only changed my life, it changed access to health care in Joplin forever. Many physicians, including the ones I worked for, closed their practices to become employed by hospital systems. I was left without the work that I loved and was so devoted to. Many families were without the personal touch that can often mean so much during this critical time in their lives.”

As part of MyMedLab’s next generation approach to health care, CancerSteps offers live frequently asked question (LiveFAQ) sessions with Edwina and other health care providers via CancerSteps.com so that anyone can participate in the collective knowledge sharing process and get the answers they need.

Joplin’s Mercy Hospital Receives Gift from the Middle East to Fund Vital Pediatric Care

Joplin’s Mercy Hospital Receives Gift from the Middle East to Fund Vital Pediatric Care

Joplin, Mo. (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

The most vulnerable of Joplin, Missouri’s newborns will soon receive sophisticated care in their own community, through the generosity of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy in Washington, D.C. Today, during a ceremony in Joplin, Mercy leaders and UAE Ambassador to the United States Yousef Al Otaiba announced details of a million gift from the UAE Embassy that will fund a pediatric section and the hospital’s first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The NICU will provide specialized care for ill or premature newborn infants. It will be part of the pediatric section that will occupy an entire floor of the new Mercy Hospital Joplin, and that will be named to reflect the generosity of the UAE gift. The new hospital is currently being built on the city’s south side.

The announcement of the UAE’s gift came just days before the one-year anniversary of a tornado that killed 161 people and destroyed 8,000 buildings in Joplin, including the Mercy-owned St. John’s Regional Medical Center.

Within days of the tornado, Mercy said it would rebuild in Joplin, pledging to spend nearly billion on temporary and permanent structures, as well as continuing to pay all Mercy employees in Joplin. Mercy’s pledge significantly exceeds proceeds the ministry expects from insurance, creating an opportunity for others to participate in the revitalization of Joplin’s life and economy.

Mercy’s commitment to Joplin drew the interest of Ambassador Al Otaiba and the UAE government, which has a track record of medical philanthropy in the U.S., and has assisted other communities that have suffered the destructive force of natural disasters.

“The ambassador made clear in our conversations that he understands how health care is crucial to a stable and thriving community,” said Lynn Britton, Mercy president and CEO. “This is what true philanthropy is all about.”

Ambassador Al Otaiba told Britton that he not only admired Mercy’s commitment to rebuild, but appreciated the opportunity to ensure that Joplin would benefit from improved health care as part of its revival.

“The resilience of the people of Joplin is an inspiration to the entire world,” said Ambassador Al Otaiba. “Emiratis have watched this community recover and rebuild from the disaster last year, and we are honored to help Mercy deliver an enhanced level of medical care to children. It is our hope that current and future generations of Joplin residents will benefit from the hospital’s new children’s wing and NICU.”

The old St. John’s hospital did not have a NICU, forcing many Joplin families to travel during a particularly stressful time and often lengthy recovery – when caring for infants born prematurely or with life-threatening complications.

Joplin has already experienced the generosity of the UAE Embassy, which donated million to provide laptops for all 2,200 of the city’s high school students. The computers are helping students cope with the disruptions caused by the destruction of their school in the tornado.

“This is the kind of relationship that our Founder Catherine McAuley would be very proud of because it connects people for the greater good,” said Sister Mary Roch Rocklage, Mercy’s health ministry liaison. “In this case, because our Middle East neighbors reached out, our babies will have access to critical care.”

About The United Arab Emirates – The UAE is a source of stability, tolerance, innovation and growth in the Arabian Gulf and around the globe. The U.S. and the UAE are reliable allies, with historical and present-day shared security and economic interests. In fact, the UAE is the largest export market for U.S. goods in the Middle East and more U.S. naval vessels visit UAE ports than any other port outside the U.S.

The U.S. and the UAE also enjoy growing social and cultural ties, and many U.S. institutions in education, health care and the arts have formed collaborative partnerships with UAE entities. Since its founding, a main pillar of the UAE’s foreign policy has been focused on addressing global challenges through the use of foreign aid and humanitarian assistance. The UAE has also been a major contributor of emergency relief to regions affected by conflict and natural disasters, including deploying much-needed resources after the earthquakes in Haiti, Pakistan and Japan, and to the U.S. following Hurricane Katrina. For more information visit www http://www.uae-embassy.org.

About Mercy – Mercy is the eighth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S. and serves more than 3 million people annually. Mercy includes 31 hospitals, more than 200 outpatient facilities, 38,000 co-workers and 1,600 integrated physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Mercy also has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. For more about Mercy, visit http://www.mercy.net.

Frack Free Nation, Inc. holds Grassroots Peaceful Day of Action in New York State Capitol

Frack Free Nation, Inc. holds Grassroots Peaceful Day of Action in New York State Capitol

Abram Loeb, founding organizer of Frack Free Nation and Joanne Farrell of Occupy Albany stage a peaceful protest in front of the doors to the Executive Chamber.

Albany, NY (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

On May 15th, grassroots citizens of New York and beyond took their message to Albany and called on Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health to stop all new gas extraction until a full public health assessment has been conducted. They demanded that the Governor withdraw the Revised Draft SGEIS that addresses permit conditions required for gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale, and that New York State ban hydraulic fracturing on the basis that it poses serious health and environmental risks.

They also called on President Obama to repeal the Energy Policy act of 2005, which exempted the oil and gas industry from the protections of The Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Clean Air Act.

The event included music, speakers, and a variety of peaceful direct actions in and around the Capitol, including a collection of water at the Hudson River and a peaceful die-in protest, which resulted in two arrests. Abram Loeb, founding organizer of Frack Free Nation and Joanne Farrell of Occupy Albany were charged with disorderly conduct after they allegedly sprawled in front of the doors to the Executive Chamber. Colia Clark, a 2012 New York Green Party candidate for US Senate and civil rights activist, lead the crowd in singing, “It isn’t nice to block the doorways, it isn’t nice to go to jail. There are nicer ways to do it but the nice ways always fail,” as the two activists blocked the doors.

“The peaceful day of action was a success in uniting the grassroots of the environmental and social justice movements together for a ban on fracking,” said Loeb. “We must begin to look at protecting our water and children’s health as a human rights issue.”

The day began with a press conference at the entrance to the Capitol where Frack Free Nation provided a platform for grassroots candidates and their supporters. Tom Porter, the Chief of the Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community, opened the event with a traditional prayer for all of creation and the next seven generations to come. At Noon, Walk About Water and Frack Free Nation joined in a walk to the Hudson River, where participants collected water to carry back to the Department of Health and Capitol building.

At 2:30 p.m. Frack Free Nation held a rally in The War Room of the Capitol building and presented Governor Cuomo with a basket of sustainable produce from upstate New York that would be adversely affected by fracking, including Cortland apples, New York State cheese, organic wine from the Finger Lakes, and maple syrup. Speakers included Colia Clark, Joel Tyner, a candidate for Congress in the newly created 19th Congressional District, and Eyad Alkurabi, the National Organizer for Get Equal.

At 4:00 p.m., the Frack Free Nation Grassroots Peaceful Day of Action paused to join the All Star Rally hosted by New Yorkers Against Fracking.

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) ?Supplement 411.org? Initiative Helps Athletes Find Safer Nutritional Products

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) “Supplement 411.org” Initiative Helps Athletes Find Safer Nutritional Products

Ann Arbor, Mich. (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

To help athletes steer clear of tainted and adulterated nutritional products, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has launched a new “Supplement 411” initiative. NSF International, an independent organization that tests and certifies products for the dietary and nutritional supplement industry, fully supports USADA’s Supplement 411.org campaign to help athletes make educated decisions when it comes to choosing nutritional products.

NSF International is currently the only independent third party testing and certification organization to meet the stringent requirements of USADA’s Supplement 411 program, which requires Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) audits and toxicological reviews. As the developer of the only American national standard for dietary supplements (NSF/ANSI Standard 173), NSF International developed the NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® programs to test and certify the safety and quality of dietary and sports nutrition products.

The NSF Dietary Supplement Certification program requires GMP audits of manufacturing facilities, as well as toxicology, label claim and contaminant reviews. The NSF Certified for Sport® program builds on this by also screening supplements for more than 165 banned substances and undeclared ingredients including stimulants, narcotics, steroids, diuretics, beta-2-agonists, masking agents and other substances, as well as unsafe levels of contaminants.

The NSF Certified for Sport® program is recognized by major sports organizations such as the NFL, MLB, and their player associations, PGA, LPGA and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) to help ensure the sports supplements their athletes use are free of athletic banned substances.

The NSF Certified for Sport® program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Standards Council of Canada. The program also meets USADA’s criteria of maintaining multiple international accreditations including ISO Guide 65 (requirements for bodies operating product certification systems), ISO 17025 (requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) and ISO 17020 (criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection).

“NSF International fully supports USADA’s initiative to eliminate adulterated dietary supplements and nutritional products in the marketplace, and we will continue to do our part by offering testing and certification solutions that safeguard athletes and consumers from taking such products,” said Ed Wyszumiala, NSF International’s General Manager of Dietary Supplement Certification Programs.

“To help athletes find supplements that have been screened and certified by NSF International, we recently developed an NSF Certified for Sport App that enables people to easily search NSF’s list of certified products from an iPhone (and iPad) or Android phone,” Wyszumiala added.

“The need for these programs is great. Multiple studies have shown that as many as 20-25 percent of the bodybuilding products sold over-the-counter in health food stores may be spiked with anabolic steroids and other substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). We must make it easier for athletes and consumers to find safe products,” Wyszumiala concluded.

Both the NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® programs are part of NSF International’s Health Sciences Division, which offers certification, training, consulting, GMP and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) testing, R&D and auditing for the pharmaceutical, dietary supplement and medical device industries.

Editor’s Note: Ed Wyszumiala, General Manager of NSF’s Dietary Supplement Certification Programs, is available for media interviews. Contact Greta Houlahan at 734-913-5723 or houlahan(at)nsf(dot)org if you’d like to set up an interview.

About NSF International: NSF International is an independent organization that writes standards and tests and certifies products for the food, water and consumer goods industries to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment (nsf.org). Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment.

NSF International’s Health Sciences Division includes NSF Pharmalytica, a GLP & GMP contract laboratory; NSF-DBA, which has more than 25 years of pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, and medical devices training expertise; NSF Reference Standards; and NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® athletic banned substances screening. NSF’s Health Science Division operates globally throughout North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Additional NSF services include management systems registrations delivered through NSF International Strategic Registrations, Ltd. (NSF-ISR), organic certification through Quality Assurance International (QAI), food safety and quality programs through the NSF Food Safety Division, drinking water product certification through the NSF Water Division, sustainability services through NSF Sustainability, and NSF Education and Training programs.
